This week's featured speaker is Fire Chief Dennis Doan, who will speak about PTSI in first responders.  It's an important topic that deserves our full attention.  Please make time in your schedule to join us for lunch on Thursday.
The Membership Committee will meet this Thursday at 11am in the Crystal Ballroom.  If you're not yet a member of this committee, this is a great opportunity to sit in & learn more.
Our first Better Friendships Dinner of the Rotary year is scheduled for Monday, October 14th at Todd Fischer's home.  Sushi, saki, & so much fun!  You can sign up at the next meeting or register on ClubRunner.
Recent Service
Several people turned out for our monthly meal service at River of Life Men's Shelter.  Volunteers included Bill von Tagen, Molly Guenther, James Slover, Mark Skudlarek (prospective member), & Kevin Allen.  We had enough helpers to serve restaurant-style & better interact the guests.  Next opportunity to serve will be Thursday, November 7th at 6:15pm.
Lunch Program
October 3rd
Jerry Schroeder played piano, Bryce Whetzell gave the invocation, & Phil Brubaker handled the floor mic duties.  President Kevin did his part.
Beth Markley brought Julia Brok, our exchange student from the Netherlands, as well as her future host moms Shana Moore & Marcie Kowakzyk.  Beth's husband, fellow Rotarian, & Assistant District Governor Mike Markley was also in attendance.  Guest Mark Skudlarek heard about Rotary from his barber & decided to visit.  He was so moved by our featured speaker that he joined us at River of Life to serve meals & plans to submit his membership application very soon.
Three Things - Mystery Rotarian
Here were the clues:
1) I owned a bed & breakfast inn at Lake Tahoe.
2) I was the mayor of the US Olympic Village in 1984.
3) I shook hands with four US Presidents:  Eisenhower, JFK, Reagan, & Clinton.

Happy Dollars
Bill von Tagen was happy for his son, who is a filmmaker.  His movie "Heritage" will be featured at The Flicks in mid-November.  We're invited!
Bill Agler spent several days in bad weather hunting moose in British Columbia.  Didn't get one this time.
Bob Rice was happy for his 50th wedding anniversary & his 76th birthday!
Jerry Schroeder was happy for Bob Rice, as well.
Kevin Learned recognized our speaker, DG Rich Kirkham, & was glad people are still willing to volunteer for the position.  Ken Howell also gave happy dollars in honor of Rich.
Ron Gambassi was happy for his son Jack, who started school at the University of Utah.
Ryan Erstad was happy for Rake Up Boise, which is scheduled for November 9th, and for Andy Erstad, who is continuing to do great things in the architecture world.
Laurie Zuckerman was happy for a fundraiser being held by the Southwest Rotary Club to support their next global grant.  It is scheduled for October 13th from 5pm-9pm at Rarity Rugs located at 219 Murray St in Garden City.
We proved to District Governor Rich Kirkham that we are the best singing club in Idaho with a full-throated rendition of All Hail to Rotary, led by Jerry Schroeder & Bill Agler.
Our Speaker:  Rich Kirkham
District 5400 Governor
Rich gave a spirited presentation about Rotary & all that's happening in our district this year.  He loves this year's theme "Rotary Connects the World," as it captures one of the great benefits of being a Rotarian.
Our district has 1,762 members in 44 clubs but we all thrive under one motto:  Service Above Self.
Rich mentioned two events that we'll want to attend.  The first is the District Celebration on May 15-16th in Pocatello.  There will be amazing speakers & fun activities.  The second is the Rotary International Conference in Honolulu, Hawaii from June 6th to June 11th.

He shared several inspirational stories including that of Chad Hymas, a husband & father whose life was forever changed by an accident that left him paralyzed.  Chad will be one of the speakers at the District Celebration next May.
Rich also emphasized the importance of saying "YES" in Rotary.  Say "yes" because it's not about you, it's for something greater than yourself.
District Leaders in One Frame:  Rich & Kathy Kirkham plus Mike Markley on the right.
Club Business & Announcements
President Kevin kept things short.  He asked for input on what time to hold the Christmas Party on December 19th.  The majority of the audience preferred it be held during our regular lunch hour.
Mystery Rotarian:  Phil Brubaker
Phil is a long-time Rotarian & serves as our Club Administrative Director.  He oversees the committees that handle many of the essential functions in the club.
Funday Sunnies!
