Lunch Program
September 12th
Just as the week prior, we had Jerry Schroeder on piano, Dwight Pond gave the invocation, & Bryce Whetzell managed the floor mic.
Janie Best, a long-time Rotarian, past president, & has held most every title in Rotary.  She's new to town, looking for a club, & has visited us two weeks in a row.  Has she found her new Rotary home?
Nash Faulk from Edina Rotary in Minnesota.  He is moving to Boise & considering his Rotary options.  He spoke with President Kevin after the program & said it was one of the best Rotary meetings he's attended.
Tom Stitzel brought his son, Jeff Stitzel.
David Riffe introduced prospective member Matt Freeman.
Happy Dollars
Paul Schmidt, Tom Wilford, Bill Agler, & Rourke O'Brien were happy this week!  President Kevin shared a photo of Jim Steele, Bob Lloyd, Jerry Schroeder, & Bob Rice gathered around the piano singing a beautiful song.....our own Million Dollar Quartet.  Kevin was a million dollars happy in is heart but just $4 happy in his wallet.
In honor or 9/11, Bill Agler & Jerry Schroeder led us in a powerful rendition of "This Is My Country."  Our guest speaker, Lynn Hightower, later commented that signing along with us was a highlight of her visit.
Our Speaker - Lynn Hightower, Executive Director, Downtown Boise Association
Lynn has served as DBA's Executive Director.  Although it was her 2nd to last day on the job, she gave an energetic presentation on the Downtown Boise Association & its important role in the community.
The DBA's mission is to create value through vibrancy; to build both business & community in Downtown Boise.  Their 4 program areas include:
  1. Communications / Advocacy for Economic Development
  2. Promoting Downtown as a Desired Destination
  3. Produce Signature Showcase Events
  4. Beautification & Enhance Boise Improvement District (BID) Services
From an operating budget of roughly $1m, $652,120 was reinvested into marketing, programming, & promoting the BID in 2018.  The estimated attendance of DBA-produced events was 126,650.  Their signature events include Alive After Five, First Thursday, the Father's Day Car Show, & the Christmas Tree Lighting.
Their service team spent 8,500 hours on downtown maintenance & trash removal.  DBA also oversees 509 flower planters, 35 streetlamp banner campaigns, & much of the holiday decor at Christmastime.
Downtown Boise is the heart of economic development for the city, Treasure Valley, & in some measures, the State of Idaho.  As of 2018, there were 45,553 jobs in Downtown Boise, which accounts for 26% of jobs in the city.
The assessed value per acre of land in Downtown Boise is $2.5 million, compared to $438,000 in Boise & $78,700 in Ada County.

Our own Gary Mahn was a founder of the Downtown Boise Association & shared his insight on how it all began.  It's a great story!  See it here:

  • Dwight Pond, who does such a wonderful job with our invocations & social media pages, celebrates 16 years.
  • President-Elect Beth Markley has been a Rotary rock star for 14 years!
  • Rounding out the list are three of President Kevin's favorite guys, John Davis (8 years), David Arkoosh (7 years), & Past President Dirk Manley (6 years).
