Happy Dollars

Dave Silva was happy about his softball team.
Bob Maynard was happy for Ryan Erstad's last Community Development Committee meeting & for Rake Up Boise on Nov 9th.
Beth Markley mentioned that our exchange student's host family is dealing with a medical issue & encourages Rotarians to invite Julia to activities around Boise.
Kevin Learned was impressed with Beth Markley's vocabulary in her blog Midlife Sentence, particularly in describing sex when she tells exchange students "no dating."
Jason Billester was happy the Boise Rescue Mission won the BBB's Torch Award this year.
David Arkoosh recognized a person in the room who helped him with financing his home.  Like Rotary, he doesn't get to spend much time there but still pays the mortgage.

Song

Bruce Mills led us in song as Jerry Schroeder played piano.

Our Speaker - Lauren McLean, Boise City Council President & Mayoral Candidate

Lauren is a graduate of Boise State & Notre Dame.  She's served on Boise City Council for 8 years & is a small business owner.

She moved to Idaho when her husband was hired at Micron.  Lauren wasn't sure she wanted to live in Boise but during her first visit for her husband's interview, she explored the city & foothills and was hooked.

In her position, she often hears concerns about growth, affordable housing, & traffic.  Lauren cited the Brookings Report, which stated that Boise's growth rate may not be sustainable, in part due to wage inequality.  Read the report here:

When asked about how we can make housing more affordable, Lauren mentioned a community housing land trust & public/private partnerships.  We also need to improve transit as it's linked to the cost of housing.

Lauren was also asked about attracting more long-term, higher-paying jobs to Boise.  She's a big believer in partnerships & as mayor, would facilitate collaboration between various entities.  She again mentioned the need to invest in infrastructure & a regional transit system.

Better Friendships Dinners

We have TWO dinners planned in October.  On Monday, October 14th, Todd Fischer will show us how to make sushi.  President Kevin recalled how much he enjoyed attending this same dinner last year.

On Wednesday, October 30th, Bill von Tagen will host a "Training Session" at his home.  By training he means we'll play with trains!

You can find more info on these events, please check our website, ClubRunner mobile app, & future newsletters.

Seedling Planting

President Kevin showed a video from next year's District Governor Ben Nelson promoting a project on November 2nd at Deer Flat Refuge.  Rotary clubs in the western Treasure Valley are leading the effort to restore land damaged by wildfire by planting 1,900 seedlings.  They could use our help!  If interested, please contact Laurie Zuckerman.

You can view Ben Nelson's video here:

Next Week

District Governor Rich Kirkham is our guest speaker.  Rich is a high-energy person with a deep love for Rotary.  You'll want to be there to hear his message.

We also have two committee meetings before the meeting, both of which will be in the Crystal Ballroom.  The Membership Committee, chaired by David Riffe, will meet at 11am.  The Program Committee, chaired by Tim Bower, will meet at 11:30am.  If you'd like to have more input on membership or our weekly programs, this is your opportunity to participate.
