In Case You Missed It
We kicked off 2020 with three terrific programs.  On the 9th we heard from Conductor Robert Franz and violist Jennifer Drake.  They explained the history baroque music, demonstrated the difference in bows for the viola, and treated us to beautiful music.
On the 16th we heard from Lachelle Smith with the University of Idaho about Project ECHO.  Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) is a proven strategy to quickly address critical health outcomes.  Using video conferencing and proven adult learning techniques, ECHO Idaho expands access to specialty and high-quality primary care for Idahoans in rural and underserved areas by connecting community providers with specialist teams for real-time interactive continuing medical education and mentoring.  Providers learn best practices, receive feedback on difficult patient cases, and earn continuing medical education credits.
We also heard about Bill von Tagen's recent journeys to Rotary clubs in Germany.  Finally, President Kevin celebrated January anniversaries:
  • Kevin Learned - 43 years
  • Diane Minnich - 27 years
  • Nancy Chinn - 24 years
  • Ken Howell - 18 years
  • Bill von Tagen - 17 years
  • Mason Fuller - 15 years
  • James Robinson - 6 years
  • Dennis Doan - 4 years
  • Leann Arkema - 1 year
On the 23rd we enjoyed a club assembly that featured a variety of Rotary topics.  It started with a history moment of Ken Howell, who was interviewed by Jim Steele.  We then saw President Kevin's "Halftime Show," a video highlighting our club's accomplishments through the 1st half of the year.  Membership Director David Riffe issued blue badges to Linda Stevens, Mike Halverson, & Scott Tagg.  David updated the club on how our board simplified the blue badge process to get new members integrated more quickly.  He spoke about our mentorship efforts, utilizing the expertise of Past Presidents James Bedal, Ron Gambassi, & Dirk Manley
David also spoke about our new Corporate Leadership Member Option.  This is intended to attract local business leaders who share Rotary values but may be too busy to attend regularly.  A company's Owner, President, CEO, COO, CFO, etc., may join & also designate a 2nd member from their organization to become a Rotarian at a discounted rate, ensuring their company is always well-represented at Rotary.  See Kevin Allen or David Riffe for more information.
The club assembly continued with President Kevin awarding Paul Harris Fellow pins to Bill von Tagen (+2), Wayne Schneider (+6), Bob Rice (+2), & Betty Munis (+2).  Past DG Marianne Barker also awarded Todd Fischer his Paul Harris Society chevron.
Bob McQuade then gave a presentation on the important work being done by the Greater Boise Rotary Foundation.  It's the one foundation in which our club is behind on its donation goal.  You can make donations via credit card at or by including an amount on your regular club invoice.  Your gift can be one-time or recurring, whatever you prefer.
President-Elect Beth Markley shared her board of directors for 2020-2021.  They include:
  • President - Beth Markley
  • President-Elect - Scott Learned
  • Vice President - David Riffe
  • Past President - Kevin Allen
  • Secretary - Laura von Boecklin Mulkey
  • Treasurer - Molly Guenther
  • Membership Director - Richard Davey
  • Rotary Foundation Director - Katie Marconi
  • Public Image Director - Bruce Mills
  • Service Director - Ryan Erstad
  • Club Administration Director - Phil Brubaker
Congratulations to David Riffe as he enters our presidential chain, new board member Richard Davey, & the rest of our returning directors!  A vote will be held at the January 30th lunch meeting to confirm this board.
As the assembly wound down, Past President Dirk Manley awarded Paul Schmidt a plaque for Rotarian of the Year 2019-2020.  Paul was integral part of Dirk's board and prior boards.  Our club is so grateful for his many contributions!
Not To Be Missed
Next week we welcome Attorney General Lawrence Wasden.
February 6th will be a busy day!  Two of our most important committees, Community Development & Membership, will meet in the Crystal Ballroom at 11am.  It will also be Brewer Appreciation Day as we host 18 people from Firkin Frolic breweries.  Our featured speaker will be Lori Fascilla from Giraffe Laugh, which earned a $20,000 GBRF grant recently!
Our signature event is set for February 13th at 4:30pm in the Basque Center.  Coincidentally, 13 brewers will be pouring along with live music from Spencer Batt, food by Thinking Tacos?, art by Jeff Leedy, & a number of other booths on display.
We need about 20 more volunteers.  Please look for the email sent by Katie Marconi & reply "yes" if you can help.  And please buy & sell tickets, available at  We'll be in the press in coming weeks.  Tune in:
